Joan of Arc One Courageous Young French Heroine born in Domrémy

Read my story in French »

Joan of Arc  was born 1412 and burned alive at the age of 19 in 1431. Her birthplace was the little hamlet of Domrémy  France, now called Domrémy-la-Pucelle. La pucelle means “maid or virgin”.

In this little hamlet of only 200 people, we visited Joan’s birthplace and the church where she received her vision from God, Eglise Saint-Rémy. This is also the church where she celebrated her first communion. Joan was a very pious child who began seeing visions at the age of 12. In her visions she discovered she had a mission to fight and defend France against the English.

A short distance away….

A short distance down the road we located the 20th century Basilica of Saint Joan of Arc built in her honor.  The Basilica wrapped us in quiet and peacefulness just as the little hamlet of Domrémy. We virtually had the whole area to ourselves. Because the Basilica is built on the side of a hill, you enter the church one level below the sanctuary. Dual staircases lead upward to the sanctuary level where there are some lovely frescoes.

The Basilica literally backs up to a mountain and the view of the valley is beautiful. Our drive here through forests and winding hilly roads was lovely.

A mere 20 km from here we found the archeological site of the Grand Amphitheater. Both Domrémy and the Grand Amphitheater can be seen in one day so be sure to plan to visit both destinations.
