Half-timbered Houses and their Architectural Carvings

Angers historic architecture found in the half-timbered houses dates from the Middle Ages. These half-timbered houses represent a chief form of housing architecture in northern Europe. This type of architecture shows up as early as the twelfth century and by the fourteenth century these houses were also decorated with detailed carvings.

The more you walk and look the more incongruous it seems to see these modern store-fronts with these beautiful half-timbered houses above them.

14th Century Carvings

By the 14th century, detailed carvings such as the ones found on these buildings began to decorate the half-timbered houses. Living in a country that is not yet 250 years old, I am fascinated by these carving that have survived since the 14th century!

Angers Historic Area

In Angers historic area, the “old town”, streets are cobbled and pedestrianized. It feels as though you have stepped back in time and everywhere you look you will find Angers historic architecture. This area is adjacent to the Château so be sure to take the time to explore after you visit the Château.

The city gite/apartment we rented for the week was a bit further down this cobbled road. It was a delightful experience!

As my husband is just 6 feet tall, it is a good comparison for the height of the door. Were people shorter during this time period or was there some other reason the door is so low. The grid of iron to the left of the door handle most likely as a small door on the other side which could be opened to address whomever stood outside the door.

If you enjoyed these anciennes portes  (old doors) you might also enjoy this post on medieval doors. Sometimes the age of an architectural feature can be deceiving.
