L’Isle sur La Sorgue Provence

[Guest blog post]

One of the most charming medieval towns I have visited in Provence is L’Isle-sur-La-Sorgue. Built along five branches of the Sorgue river, there are several fish filled canals that add to the character of this town. Several lovely water wheels (some still turn) that once provided water for the many lace mills once here just add to the charm.   Doesn’t this sound wonderful! Notre-Dame-des-Anges

The Notre-Dame-des-Anges church is in the center of town and has a clock showing the time, date and phases of the moon. Cafés and shops with many more streets that boast extensive shopping opportunities spiraling out from the town center surround the church.   I planned my visit for the Sunday market day and picked up a beautiful sunflower filled tablecloth that I use every summer – bringing back happy memories! There is a little bit of everything displayed’ wonderful linens, lavender & soaps of Provence.

Rent a Bike

I also rented a bike in town and biked to the Parc Gautier, just outside of town, for a picnic under shady plane trees. Many antique shops are located across from the railway station to explore in the afternoon.   You can easily arrive by bus, with Avignon about 50 minutes away or by rail, but driving through this area of France is wonderful.

A Great Base for Exploring other Towns

It is a great base to explore Arles, Nimes, Saint Remy-de-Provence and other towns in Provence.   I based myself in Le Thor, in a charming B&B that I highly recommend, Les Carmes. I was lucky enough to stay here not too long after its opening. The charming British couple who run this B&B are a joy. Breakfast outside in the patio is delicious, but why wouldn’t it be since one of their son’s is a Cordon Bleu trained chef!

Evenings are a great time to connect with the other guests, with local and in-season food that is outstanding! There is even a pool to cool off during those hot summer days.

This town was so lovely and the people so friendly that I can’t wait to return. Do add this part of France to your bucket list!
