Angers Museums

Angers museums are wonderful and it would be difficult for me to choose a favorite because each one houses a different genre. How can I choose Apocalypse tapestries over sculpture or paintings over archeological artifacts. You will just have to visit for yourself to see which is your favorite - - if you can choose. Museums should not just be a rainy day tourist escape; they are a very good way to help you connect with the local history.

  • Musée des beaux arts (Angers Museum of Fine Arts) at 14, rue du Musée has two distinct parts, works from the 14th century to today and objects of art from Neolithic times to today.
  • Musee des Beaux Arts Angers France

This mosaic dates from the second century A.D. and was discovered in 1879 when excavations took place at Place Ralliament.

  • Chateau d’Angers houses the Tapestry of the Apocalypse. This is the longest tapestry in the world at 140 meters long. Each tableau represents a scene from the Book of Revelations by St John. It is absolutely breath-taking.

More postcard images of this beautiful tapestry can be found at Angers museums photos.

  • Gallery of David d’Angers , housed in the All Saints Abbey Church, is located 31 bis Rue Toussaint. The sculpture work is beautiful and afterwards you can wander out to the cloister garden and on to the Musée des beaux arts. For more pictures click here

  • Musée d’Histoire Naturelle (Natural History Museum) is located at 43 rue Jules Guitton.

  • Musée Jean Lurçat which is in the Hôtel-Dieu St Jean (St John’s Hospital) is located at 4 Boulevard Arago. This is an example of the hospital construction from the late 12th century.

St John’s Hospital contained a chapel, cloister and granary. It was marked as a historical monument in 1871 and in 1967 it became the Museum of Contemporary Tapestry. It houses the Chant du Monde which is an Aubusson tapestry that was begun in 1957 and at the time of the creator’s death in 1966 it was unfinished. The Chant du Monde is 125 meters long and represents only 2/3 of the planned tapestry. There are 10 magnificent panels of contemporary tapestry that are not to be missed. These tapestry pictures are from postcards as photographs are not allowed inside.
